Flowing effortlessly from luxurious, soft and smooth to downright gritty and golden, Tonya Boyd-Cannon’s voice—with its rich, deep contralto range—can only be described as what happens when silk meets sand.
Whether she is playing to a large music festival crowd or sharing her silky serenade in a more intimate setting; backed by a full band or accompanied only by acoustic guitar; performing original material or putting her twist on classic and contemporary soul, R&B, funk or jazz, Tonya knows how to give her audience just what they need—music that pours from her soul, touches theirs and leaves them wanting more.
With a lifetime of musical influences that began to take shape when she was just a child singing in her church choir, Tonya Boyd-Cannon began her professional career in 1999 as a background vocalist with Jean Knight. She would soon be inspired to undertake her first solo project when she recorded her first single PRECIOUS, a song she dedicated to her late grandmother.
After being displaced and suffering the total loss of her home in Hurricane Katrina, Tonya released the Rise My Child album in 2006, dedicating the album to survivors of the storm and life. The video titled “Rise My Child” was recorded in her Lower 9th Ward neighborhood.
When she combines her elements of sound, techniques, skills and passion to create “MUZIC,” Tonya gives life to a song and tells a story through the melody as she does in her single IN NEW ORLEANS, her impromptu ode to the city she calls home, that has become a crowd favorite.
Tonya has worked with numerous recording artists and has thrilled audiences across the nation with her original sound and high-energy shows. She has wooed the crowds at Alabama’s Bayfest, Bay St. Louis’ Gospelpalooza, NOLA’s Cutting Edge Fest, Essence Music Festival and many other venues. More importantly, Tonya is a true entertainer who shares her passion and love for music with her audience every time she takes the stage.
So come on and Gro-o-o-o-ve with TBC Muzic!
